Brexit: Remainer Tory leader hopes to plot to warn AX exit against voter ‘betrayal’ | Politics | News

Boris Johnsonwhich the famous “Get Brexit Done” slogan in his 2019 general election campaign, won a large majority of more than 80 seats in the House of Commons – helping him defy a vote of no confidence in him last month. But the announcement of the prime minister’s resignation on Wednesday has new in the ever-doubtful Remainer movement.Last week Sir Keir Starmer risked a Labor Party backlash by finally insisting the UK has no chance of rejoining the European Union

However, Remainers now believe that with a new Tory leader and prime minister, the chances of a Brexit reversal have increased significantly.

But Ben Harris-Quinney, chairman of the Bow Group think tank, told Express.co.uk: “The reason Keir Starmer announced against the will of his party that Labor would not roll back Brexit was because he knows that they can’t win an election if they try.

“For the Conservative Party, that is doubly true. If a future Conservative Party leader tried to undo Brexit, they would not only lose the next election, but also the end of the Conservative Party.

“For too long those who voted for and supported the Conservative Party have been betrayed, and further betrayal will not be tolerated.”

The political pundit went on to warn: “It is crucial that any future leader recognize that Brexit demanded a revolution at Westminster, which was not delivered despite promises. Boris ruled to Blair’s left, and a continuation of this will result in jeopardy.

“If the Conservative Party leadership elections give members full say over a wide range of candidates, then they will choose someone who will implement that Brexit revolution.

“If that process is stolen by established and Westminster figures, they risk a repeat of the last three leaders, or worse.”

Harris-Quinney also crushed Remainer’s hopes of overturning Brexit by insisting that senior voices, such as historically strong Tories, “will remain on the sidelines”.

The Bow Group chairman said: “The survivors will of course try to use these events for their own ends, but figures like Michael Heseltine have almost no support among Conservative members.

“He and many of his followers have been expelled from the Conservative Party, and while they will sneak from the sidelines to undo Brexit, they will likely remain on the sidelines.”

The political pundit stressed the importance of ensuring now a “real Brexiteer who steps Downing Street as the next prime minister” who can take the UK to the next level on the global stage.

Mr Harris-Quinney added that there is now a huge opportunity for the next leader to “embrace the patriotic Brexit agenda” and ensure that the EU split is “properly done”.

He concluded: “The Conservative and Brexit movements now have a battle to fight: to ensure that a true Brexiteer enters Downing Street as the next Prime Minister, who can complete Brexit in letter and spirit and lead the nation forward in that spirit.

Boris has made many promises and won the faith of many of those people who had lost faith in political parties but voted for Brexit and in 2019 proved to deliver the largest Conservative majority since Thatcher.

“There is therefore a huge opportunity for a future leader to embrace the patriotic Brexit agenda and deliver for them. If they do, there is potential for a huge improvement for Boris, and for Brexit not to be done alone. to be done, but also to be done well.

“The Bow Group will encourage figures like Esther McVey and Suella Braverman to stand up, and ensure they get a full and fair run for membership.

“They have the potential to embrace the Brexit agenda, recapture the spirit of the referendum and 2019 support in both the red wall and the Tory heartlands, and give a betrayed public the agenda they continue to vote for and always be refused.”

During his resignation speech, Johnson mentioned a number of achievements he had made during his time as prime minister and that he was “hugely proud” that he “made Brexit”.

He said outside 10 Downing Street: “Of course I am immensely proud of the achievements of this government: from finalizing Brexit to managing our relations with the continent for more than half a century, to reclaiming power for this country.” to have its own laws in parliament, which will help us all through the pandemic, provide the fastest vaccine rollout in Europe, the quickest way out of lockdown, and in the last few months lead the West to stand up to the Putin’s aggression in Ukraine.

“And now let me say to the Ukrainian people that I know that we in the UK will continue to support your fight for freedom for as long as it takes.”
