Caroline was on the BA624 flight bound for Rhodes, Greece, from London on Saturday, but the incident forced the pilot to make an emergency diversion to Athens.

She tweeted: “A big thank you to the @British_Airways pilot who guided us safely to Athens after our plane’s windshield shattered… terrifying.

“Now happily waiting for another not so dramatic flight to Rhodes!”

The airline arranged for an auxiliary plane to take the passengers to Rhodes later in the day.

A British Airways spokesperson said: “Due to a technical problem, the flight was diverted to Athens and landed safely.

“We have apologized to the customers and a replacement aircraft has been arranged to get them to their final destination.”

It is not yet known what caused the windshield to break.

It comes when a passenger caught the shocking moment when a window of the plane he was traveling in seemed to burst panic on board.

A woman last month was shocked to discover she was sitting next to a “smashed” airplane window during her flight.

Fortunately, it wasn’t all what it seemed – although some people said they would still be terrified.
