an Evans has sealed his place in the National Bank Open semi-finals, but an all-British last-four clash with Jack Draper in Canada does not happen.

Britain’s No1 Evans recovered from an early deficit, beating American Tommy Paul 1-6 6-3 6-4 in Montreal on Friday night to reach a Masters 1000 semi-final for the second time in his career.

However, compatriot Draper will not be his next opponent after being defeated by the Spaniard 7-6 6-1 Pablo Carreno-Busta.

“You wonder if it’s going to happen, if you’re going to get into the game, and I got in,” Evans said.

“As I got ahead I really took it to Tommy and that’s kinda been my way during this week so far, and I did it in a good way, I was excited and I thought it was a good fight between me and Tommy.”

Carreno Busta, 31, became the only player in Montreal not to drop a set when he knocked out Draper and booked his spot against Evans.

The 20-year-old scraped hard, but Carreno Busta dominated the entire time to win 7-6(4) 6-1, while his younger opponent reached his first Masters quarter-final the week before beating world No5 champion Stefanos. Tsitsi pass.

The other semifinal will be contested between Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud, after the former defeated Nick Kyrgios and the latter sent home local favorite Felix Auger-Aliassime.
