Contractors are working under ‘extreme conditions’ to clear Auckland roads closed by slippage and flooding

Unprecedented rainfall in Auckland has had an “unusual and serious impact” on the road network.

“We have never seen anything like it,” said Jacqui Hori-Hoult, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency regional manager of maintenance and operations.

Floods and landslides have forced the closure of roads and highways across the region, with limited access between Auckland and Northland.

Contractors worked under “extreme conditions” to clear some roads overnight, Hori Hoult said, adding that 48 truckloads of debris were removed from one road alone.
