Coronation Street absolutely tore our hearts in recent scenes as they aired one of the most devastating deaths ever.

Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) became concerned when her beloved dog Cerberus went off his food and revealed to Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) that he had been sick overnight.

Tyrone became concerned and suggested Evelyn take him to the vet, though she didn’t want to because of the bills that would follow.

However, when she came home with chicken and rice for the beloved pet, she was immediately shocked when he didn’t get up to greet her, as he always did.

Tyrone and Evelyn then picked up the ten-year-old pup and took him straight to the vet, hoping to get some answers.

When the vet checked him over, he was worried he might have eaten something he shouldn’t have, though Evelyn was sure he hadn’t.

The vet decided he needed to keep Cerberus in to run some tests, so Evelyn said goodbye before going home.

While back on the Cobbles, she revealed Cerberus’ condition to Roy Cropper (David Neilson), who had to confess himself.

The cafe owner revealed that he dropped an Eccles cake on the floor while in the middle of a nerve-racking online chess game, which he suspected Cerberus might have eaten.

Evelyn was understandably furious that Roy had so carelessly endangered her four-legged friend, and promised never to forgive him if something bad happens.

After a call from the vet, Evelyn and Tyrone returned to the office, only to receive some heartbreaking news.

The vet explained that Cerberus’ kidneys were failing and the kindest thing they could do was put him to sleep.

A crushed Evelyn initially refuses, but after learning that Cerberus’ quality of life would be compromised if they tried any other treatment, she made the difficult decision to put him to sleep.

As Cerberus took his last breath, many tears were shed, both from characters and viewers.

Devastated, Evelyn returned home without her furry companion and was soon visited by Roy, desperate to apologize for his part in Cerberus’ demise.

The enraged Evelyn accused Roy of killing him, stating that their friendship died when her dog did.

Will Evelyn ever forgive Roy, or has she lost two best friends in one day?
