According to a recent survey, 23 per cent of adults in the UK plan not to use their heating this winter, rising to 27 per cent of parents with children under 18.

Some 69 percent said they would use their heating less than usual, while 11 percent said they could take out a loan to cover the costs.

The Liberal Democrats released the Savanta ComRes poll in August and warned that the winter will be tough for many households without targeted support.

Christine Jardine MP said: “Families and retirees across the country are making heartbreaking decisions because the government has failed to save them. It is a national scandal that parents have to choose between heating their homes and feeding their children. It shouldn’t be.”

He continued: “People don’t turn their system on all summer and try to use it when it’s really cold, only to find it doesn’t work!

“There are ball bearings in pumps and other hydraulic components that can seize if they are not used regularly.”

He recommended turning on the radiators from October 1 to warm up the system, saying 30 minutes at 16C per week is sufficient.
