Courier van hits power pole in NEV

North East Valley will experience a power outage after a New Zealand Post van crashed into a utility pole.

The accident happened at around 11.30am today on the corner of Arnold St and Leicester St.

The pole was crushed at the bottom, tilting it over a house at an angle.

Police evacuated a nearby house on Arnold St while firefighters and traffic control secured the area.

Ross Home’s retirement home has been out of power since the crash.

However, they said the effects were minimal and they expected it to be restored by 2:15 p.m.

A resident of nearby Bouverie St heard the crash and described it as a “loud bang”.

An online update from the powerline provider, Aurora Energy, said power would be out for at least half an hour in the North East Valley, Opoho and Dalmore.

Arnold St will be without electricity for eight hours to repair the pole, he said.

No injuries were reported in the accident, a police spokesman said.
