The FBI raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate gave the former president a 10-point boost over likely rival Ron DeSantis in 2024 among GOP primary voters, according to a new poll.
Dozens of agents descended on Trump’s Florida home to execute a search warrant, signed by a federal judge, to search for top-secret documents.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said he personally approved the raid, while Mr Trump criticized it and insisted he had done nothing wrong.
The FBI has removed 11 sets of documents marked as classified. Some were marked as “classified/TS/SCI”, meaning “top secret/sensitive compartmentalized information”. Such information should only be viewed in a secure government facility known as a SCIF – Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility.
A new Politico/Morning Consult opinion poll conducted after the FBI raid showed that it had given Mr. Trump a bump in Republican primary voters.
Last month, 53 percent of Republican voters and Republican independents said they would vote for Trump in the 2024 primary if held that day.
After the raid, it was found that the number for Mr. Trump had risen to 57 percent, while support for Mr. DeSantis had fallen from 23 percent to 17 percent.
No other Republican candidate had double digits.
Trump has not yet officially confirmed that he will run for the White House again in two years, but he is widely expected to do so.
The poll also found that the FBI’s raid had significantly more approval than disapproval among Americans.
Poll respondents were asked, “Do you know or know the FBI’s decision to execute a search warrant on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida?”
The results showed that 49 percent approved, while only 37 disapproved, and another 13 percent replied, “Don’t know/No opinion.”
