FEV teacher publishes white paper

White paper published by FEV Tutor

The Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University reports that supplementing classroom instruction with vigorous tutoring “leads to substantial learning gains for students.” However, there are several factors that can affect how educational institutions should implement tutoring programs. To illustrate how schools or districts can tailor a tutoring program to their specific needs, FEV teacher has published a white paper entitled “High-Impact Online Tutoring for Academic Success: An After-School Implementation.”

The white paper describes the implementation model Manchester School District (MSD) in New Hampshire used for FEV Tutor. The district trialled FEV Tutor’s powerful 1:1 online tutoring in Spring 2022 and expanded its implementation for the 2022-2023 school year.

MSD first used FEV Tutor in a four-week summer camp and now uses online tutoring sessions to support students’ math and reading skills in the district’s 21st Century after-school program. In addition, many schools allow students to participate in tutoring sessions during the school day. “We also found that people wanted to use FEV Tutor for SAT preparation and enrichment, not just learning loss,” says MSD Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning, and Leading Amy Allen. However, the district currently prioritizes students with basic skills gaps.

“The students in MSD have shown strong signs of learning recovery. We see that we’ve made a dent in their learning gaps, especially for those who are one to two years behind,” said 21st Century Program Director Tom McGee. “We know this is what students need.”

“We have strategic partnerships with K-12 districts across the country, and it is our practice to meet with each school or district and develop a data-driven tutoring model that is flexible enough to accommodate their different learning models, curriculum goals, and learning standards ,” said FEV Tutor Executive Vice President and Co-Founder Ryan Patenaude. “That kind of flexibility helps ensure tutoring services do what they’re supposed to do: accelerate learning, close long-standing learning gaps, and drive continuous improvement.”
