“Unfortunately, things aren’t looking very good,” she told Nigel Farage on his GB News show Talking Pints. “It was an absolutely national institution and a huge treasure, and I think they still make good dramas, although not as good as they used to be.

“You see all the wake boxes ticked when the cast comes.”

Miss Cook added: ‘The foreign correspondents are still second to none – people like Frank Gardner and Jeremy Bowen and Orla Guerin are wonderful. But the news gathering is really, really embarrassing. And they don’t seem to want to doubt anything.’

Miss Cook co-hosted Crimewatch with Nick Ross from 1984 to 1996. She also hosted Radio 4’s You And Yours and Making History.

She slammed the BBC for its Covid coverage.

“It’s a shame,” she said. During the lockdown, has anyone ever wondered, ‘Why?’ What are the consequences for children if you close schools? What are the consequences for university students if you close universities? Knife crime increased. Was there any journalism about that?’

“In my time we would have found out the truth.”
