Hertz and BP to collaborate on electric car charging network

Rental giants Hertz are already major players in the electric vehicle space, committing to buy hundreds of thousands of EVs from brands such as GM, North Starand Tesla — and now they plan to take an even more active role in the electrification of America’s roads. They are working with BP Pulse to install a national network of EV charging solutions for the brand and its customers.

Hertz and BP announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop a national network of electric vehicle charging stations that it hopes will make charging their rental cars a more seamless, easy-to-navigate experience for Hertz- customers will make. The company hopes to have fully converted 25% of its national rental fleet to electric by 2024.

“Hertz is accelerating electrification adoption by investing in the largest electric vehicle rental fleet in North America and expanding the availability of charging stations,” explains Stephen Scherr, CEO of Hertz. “We are excited to partner with BP Pulse to create a national charging infrastructure for the Hertz EV fleet, expanding the number of charging options available to our customers and providing them with a premium electric experience and lower emissions travel options.”

It is to the credit that BP – who, earlier this year, revealed that their BP Pulse charging stations “were about to become more profitable than gas pumps” – be enthusiastic about the collaboration with the rental company. It’s great to join forces with Hertz – quite simply, they are one of the biggest names on the road,” said Bernard Looney, the CEO of BP. “By collaborating on charging facilities and design solutions, we believe we can take the EV driving experience for US customers to the next level. And this is just the beginning for BP Pulse in the United States.”

It remains to be seen what Hertz and BP’s customer experience will ultimately look like, but anything that improves the EV rental experience will lead to more EV sales – and that’s what we’re all about.
