‘Iconic’ house in the neighbourhood

An “iconic” Queenstown property is on the market for the first time in about 60 years.

Harcourts Queenstown is selling 129 Frankton Rd – marketed as the ‘worst house on the best street’ – by auction.

Agent Megan Osborne, who is marketing the home and income along with colleague Jaiden Direen, says the potential for the quintessential beauty of yesteryear is huge.

The original owners, Russell and Annie Calvert, built a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home on the property in the early 1960s and later added a two-bedroom, one-bathroom unit above the garage.

The couple lived on the top floor, with their daughter, Marion Calvert, and were an almost constant presence in the Frankton Rd conservatory of the mint green property, opposite Pounamu Apartments, until their deaths.

Marion continued to live in the house until her sudden death a year ago last Tuesday.

The ground floor is still rented out.

Osborne says the home, with a capital value of $1,850,000, sits on 410 square feet, including a small yard and large garage.

It offers ”day-long views”, especially from the top floor, across Lake Whakatipu to The Remarkables, Cecil Peak and beyond.

The position of the property is a major selling point – a real sun visor, internal heating by means of heat pumps on both levels.

“It’s pretty incredible — it’s a great place, but then also it’s the oldest house and they usually put the oldest house in the best position.”

And it’s about a half mile walk to the CBD of Queenstown.

Osborne says if the new owner keeps the 60’s Art Deco vibe it could easily be kept as it is, but it’s also ready for refurbishment and/or redevelopment.

“We expect a lot of interest in this because it is an iconic house.”

The property will be auctioned on August 25 at noon.
