TikTok user Renae, who has a device repair account called Renduh, shared a common washing mistake that can damage your machine.

Responding to a viral video advising users to add the detergent to the agitator, the center section of a top-loading washing machine.

“No, the detergent for your washing machine will not go into your agitator. Unless your washing machine is specifically labeled that way or it says so in the manual, don’t do it,” Renae said.

She continued: “While yes, the fabric softener dispenser is removable so you can clean it nice and easy. [at the bottom] is the bolt that holds your agitator in place.”

And since many detergents contain bleach, Renae advised viewers not to place it near the metal bolt as it can corrode.

“There is a specific part for the bleach. [The compartment] drops [the side of the drum] so the bleach comes down, instead of touching your clothes or touching that bolt,” Renae explained.

The appliance expert added: “And if you don’t have a stain on your washing machine that says detergent, put the detergent in the drum first and then the clothes.”

Renae’s followers took to the TikTok comments section to share their thoughts on the reveal.

“It’s almost like there’s a manual somewhere that could tell them this. Maybe on the internet,” one viewer joked.

Another user wrote, “I once had a roommate pry the top of the agitator off with a coin to put the detergent in, no fabric softener cup on this machine.”
