Kate Middleton and Prince William arrive for Boston Celtics clash with Miami Heat | Royal | News

Prince William and Kate Middleton traveled to the United States for the first time since 2014 on a trip around the second annual Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have arrived at the Boston Celtics’ TD Garden as the 17-time NBA champions take on the Miami Heat.

William and Kate’s visit comes during their three-day visit to the United States.

Their journey is marked by the second annual Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.

Earthshot is Prince William’s £50 million initiative that hopes to encourage people to put forward ideas to tackle climate change and other pressing environmental crises in the next decade.

Confirming the pair’s presence at TD Garden, the Duke and Duchess’s official Twitter account uploaded an image of the arena accompanied by a caption that read, “Let’s go Celtics, let’s go!”

The Prince of Wales was caught wearing a blazer and denim shirt.

The Duchess, who wore a tartan dress earlier on the trip, wore a pretty blue jacket with a gold necklace and earrings.

William was also seen holding a basketball as the pair got court seats with Massachusetts Governor-elect Maura Healey and Celtics legend Thomas “Satch” Sanders.

The game between the Celtics and the Miami Heat could become a classic for the Cornwalls, as the Boston-based club currently tops the NBA’s Eastern Conference, with more than 120 points in its last four games.

Despite having the same number of titles as the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics have not won an NBA championship since Paul Pierce’s instrumental season in 2008.

The Celtics missed out on two more titles after losing to the Lakers in 2010 and the Golden State Warriors in 2022.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s visit to the TD Arena came hours after they green-lit landmarks in Boston at the start of their three-day visit to the United States last night.

The pair began the journey at a welcome event outside Boston City Hall attended by the Puritan city’s Democratic mayor, Michelle Wu, where they began the countdown to the Earthshot Awards by lighting City Hall and other prominent buildings in green.

Addressing the crowd gathered outside, the Prince thanked “all the hardy Bostonians who braved the rain tonight”.

He added: “Catherine and I are absolutely thrilled to be with you today, for our first engagement in the great city of Boston, as we count down to the Earthshot Prize Awards this Friday.

Thank you to Mayor Wu and Reverend White-Hammond for all your support of the Earthshot Prize.

“There are two reasons why Boston was the obvious choice to be the home of the Earthshot Prize in its second year.

“Sixty years ago, President John F. Kennedy’s ‘Moonshot’ speech posed a challenge to American innovation and ingenuity.

“‘We choose to go to the moon,’ he said, ‘not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.’

“It was that Moonshot speech that inspired me to launch the Earthshot Prize with the goal of doing the same thing for climate change that President Kennedy did for the space race.

“And where better to hold this year’s awards ceremony than in President Kennedy’s hometown, in partnership with his daughter and the Foundation that carries on his legacy.”

An awards ceremony will be held later today at MGM Music Hall in Boston, with Billie Eilish, Annie Lennox and Ellie Goulding in attendance.
