Lauren Sanchez sounds softer for Met Gala debut with Jeff Bezos

Lauren Sánchez has received a lot of nasty comments on social media about her clothes, especially because of a revealing dress worn to a recent state dinner at the White House. Just last night, her signature style was on display at a Met Gala party the night before, honoring Monse designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, where Sánchez donned a strapless, sheer black lace Monse mega mini — not a usual look for the designers which is also behind the Oscar de la Renta label. Needless to say, the lingerie-esque look got more of the same response.

For the actual Met Ball red carpet — a first Met stair walk for Sánchez — she was joined by her future husband, Jeff Bezos (i.e. one of the richest men in the world).

And stop with the press, Sánchez's look wasn't the most naked, over-the-top or flashy dress at the Met Museum — because at this year's Met Ball there was already an abundance of corsets and cleavage- and butt-baring dresses (see: Emily Ratajkowski.)

Sánchez's theme-appropriate Oscar de la Renta mega-dress, on the other hand, was a real switch-a-ro for her. Although her night before and night of looks were created by the same design team, they couldn't have been more different. Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim owe that to their design aesthetic for the dress, they said Fashion, was 'elevated' and 'polished'. The black velvet corset and full stained glass looking voluminous (an understatement) skirt were made from real plexiglass shards – dangerous!

Sánchez likes to live on the edge; after all, she flies her own helicopters. Sánchez said Fashion upon arrival: “I didn't want people to say, 'Oh, that's so Lauren – sexy, low-cut. I said, 'No, I think I'll try something else.' The skirt – in black, silver and white – which resembles a cracked mirror or pieces of tile, is the designers' ode to Art Nouveau and the stained glass work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The dress, called the Reflective Rosette Mosaic Ball City, also features a black velvet bustier with corset, while the skirt is made from approximately 2,000 hand-painted mosaic pieces. In total it took about 600 hours to complete. look at all the 2024 Met Gala dresses here.

Even restaurateur Keith McNally, a recent Sánchez critic, was a fan of her Met Gala look. “It never feels good when reality doesn't fit your story, but I have to admit that Bezos and Sánchez both looked beautiful and very beautiful tonight,” he posted on Instagram.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute's latest exhibition, Sleeping Beauty: Fashion Reawakening, opens to the public on Friday, May 10. Curated by Andrew Bolton, the show highlights fragile pieces from the institute's archives, all viewed through a lens of nature. From the exhibition coffee table book will be released on June 18.
