The urge of Covid-19 patients pressuring Palmerston North Hospital is easing.

The latest Covid-19 outbreak that has tested the capacity of two special wards at Palmerston North Hospital is dwindling.

There were 1,287 active cases in the MidCentral district on Monday, including 88 reinfections, following a national downward trend.

There were 27 people in hospital, but none in intensive care.

Covid-19 senior officer in charge Deborah Davies said that although the number of cases at the hospital had fallen, the hospital remained busy overall.

There were four Covid-19-related deaths in MidCentral in the past week.

“The latest numbers seem to show that we have returned to the endemic phase of the Omicron outbreak, where we were four weeks ago,” Davies said.

“This means that the number and spread of new Covid-19 and hospital cases remains stable. We are also pleased to report that flu levels are declining nationwide.”

The currently active MidCentral cases were centered in Palmerston North, with 707. There were 293 in Manawatū, 195 in Horowhenua, 84 in Tararua and 36 in Ōtaki.
