The Dunedin Bowling Club serves a large bowl with care.

The food truck, run by Liam Arthur and Jackie Bannon, serves $4 bowls of food.

Ms Bannon said everyone could bring their own bowl and the team would fill it with their simple but tasty meals.

“Basically, we want to make food more accessible to people, so we sell meals for $4 if you bring your own bowl. That’s why it’s called Dunedin Bowling Club.”

The couple accepted any container.

“People bring all kinds of things. You can bring a little click-clack, you can bring regular bowls, we fill everything, we’re not picky,” she said.

Some people took the food for their families and others ate their meal at the community center.

Mr Arthur said the meals were changed every week based on what was in season and what was available.

“We usually try to give them nice sized portions.”

An example of meals was lemongrass and coconut baked potatoes, with vegetable stew, smoked corn and a flatbread.

Simple options like macaroni and cheese were also available.

Food was bought in bulk and the couple ground their own whole grains and spices to keep the price down.

Ms Bannon said much of the food truck was a “pay it forward” system. People could purchase their meal and top up their payment with a $4 coupon that could also be eaten by someone else.

Coupons can be taken away or given to the community network for distribution.

This was very popular and some families used it as a learning exercise. Parents would explain the concept to children so they could see that not everyone had easy access to food, Ms Bannon said.

• The Dunedin Bowling Club is open Mondays and Fridays from 3:30 PM to 8:00 PM from the South Dunedin Community Center at 278a King Edward St.
