Paris has been named the world’s top city destination, according to a study that rates cities on tourism, sustainability and economic performance.
For the second year in a row, Paris is number 1 in Euromonitor International’s Top 100 City Destinations ranking, based on a comparison of 57 metrics across six ‘key pillars’: economic and business performance; tourism achievements; tourist infrastructure; tourism policy and attractiveness; health and safety; and sustainability.
This is evident from the annual report, which was published in collaboration with data intelligence company Transparent Intelligence Dubai second, followed by Amsterdam (third) and Madrid (fourth).
The rest of the top ten consists of Rome (5th), London 6th), Munich (7th), Berlin (8th), Barcelona (9th) and New York (10th), America’s top ranked city.

Other notable results include Los Angeles being the second best city in America (15th overall), Sydney coming in at only 32nd but ahead of Melbourne (34th), and Edinburgh coming in at 54th, contrary to Time Out calling it the world’s best city of 2022.
Euro monitor said: ‘The good reputation of European destinations in the Index is largely due to two main pillars: tourism policy and attractiveness, and tourism infrastructure.’
Nadejda Popova, Senior Project Manager – Services & Payments at Euromonitor, said: “The strong rebound in international tourism following the lifting of travel restrictions due to Covid-19, the increased interest in value-driven tourism offers and consumer preferences for domestic travel and short-haul flights marked dynamic moves in the rankings in 2022.

“This allowed the most proactive cities to improve their health and safety position; tourism achievements; and tourism policy and attractiveness.
‘Paris has retained the title of the world’s largest city after exceptional achievements in tourism policy and attractiveness; tourist infrastructure; and tourism performance pillars, and was again crowned the world’s top performing destination.’
The report also revealed that Dubai is leading the way in international arrivals by city, with more than 12 million trips by 2022, nearly doubling last year’s performance.
According to the report, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will be the busiest airport in the world by 2022.
It added: ‘While 2022 has been a positive year for travel and tourism, the road to full recovery from the pandemic is long and public support in all regions remains critical.’
