Police are investigating after a driver got out of his car earlier this week and assaulted a man in Masterton.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said on Monday, shortly before 10pm, two young men on foot were confronted by a driver near the intersection of High and Manchester streets in the town of Wairarapa.

The driver, who was in a black ute, chased one of the men to Leeds Place, then got out of his vehicle and assaulted the victim, police said.

The victim’s leg was badly broken and required surgery. He was recovering at Wairarapa Hospital.

Police were looking for sightings of two vehicles that may have been linked to the incident.

The first is a black ute driven by the alleged perpetrator, described as an older Ford or Nissan, with items on the blade under a tarpaulin. The second vehicle was a red, older model utility with a flat deck.

Police recently investigated a possible link between the attack and the unauthorized intervention of a vehicle on High St.
