Thousands of postal workers walk away in strike action

T

houses of Post office Workers have gone on strike in a wage dispute.

Members of the Communication Workers Union are protesting the wage and conditions dispute at the Royal Mail 24 hours in a row.

CWU official Andy Furey said the union had to call a strike because the legal mandate to take action was about to expire.

“It’s a really ridiculous aspect of the law. It had not been our intention to call any more strikes, but the employer’s attitude, in the context of our need to comply with legal legislation, left us no choice.

“We are confident that the strike – the sixth strike by CWU Post Office members – will be as firmly supported as any of the previous actions.

“And unless there is a serious wage bill, with more money on offer, then not only will this action continue, but we will begin the process of a second national strike vote.”

The CWU said the post office had increased the wage offer for 2022/23 from an initial 2% with a cash of £250 to 5% with a cash of £500.

But it said it was still “significantly far behind” current inflation levels.
