New apartments and townhouses, designed by a royal family architectural designer, will replace an old building in Sumner, a coastal suburb of Christchurch.

The signature pink building on the corner of Marriner and Burgess streets has been sold to development firm Brooksfield for approximately $1.7 million.

The firm has hired British architect and interior designer Ben Pentreath to design three apartments and three townhouses.

The $7 million development includes a retail store and parking lot underneath.

Pentreath, who already has designed houses in Georgian style for Brooksfield, has worked for King Charles’ Prince’s Foundation and designed buildings for the Duchy of Cornwall. He has also worked on the interior designs for two of Prince William and Duchess Kate’s homes: the couple’s country house Anmer House, a wedding gift from the Queen, and their Kensington Palace apartments.

Brooksfield director Vinny Holloway said he met Pentreath in Britain, who has a New Zealand connection through his husband Charlie McCormick.

Holloway said Pentreath and his firm were now finalizing the design for their Sumner site.

The nature of the location meant the houses would be more expensive than the houses they had already built, Holloway said.

The three-bedroom townhouses will sell for more than $1 million each, and the two-bedroom apartments will cost just under $1 million, he said.

“They will be higher specification than what we normally do in areas like Spreydon and Addington.”

Holloway said they would begin selling the homes early next year. Construction would begin around May and development would be completed in early 2024.

Brooksfield bought the property from Silver Skies Ltd who had dropped their plans after buying it from Nicki Carter of the Carter Group earlier this year.

It also changed hands in 2019.

The building now houses shops at street level and residences upstairs.

It is one block from the beach and across from the Hollywood movie house that is about to be renovated and reopened as part of the Silky Otter chain.
