Salman Rushdie can talk to others again after he was seriously injured in a brutal stabbing on Friday at an event in New York where the Indian-born British-American author was said to speak.

Although the motive for the attack has not been confirmed, the 75-year-old was placed under surveillance fatwa by the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on his novel the satanic one verseswith the country’s Islamic authorities offering nearly $3 million to anyone who managed to kill the author.

Rushdie was then forced into hiding after Khomeini ordered “Muslims of the world to quickly execute the author and publishers of the book”.

Iran’s current leadership has been thought to have tried to keep some distance between itself and the religious assassination order in recent years, although Khomeini’s successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, refused to withdraw the fatwa.

According to an report by the Associated Press, despite the serious nature of the injuries Rushdie sustained as a result of the stabbing, the author has now regained consciousness, with a co-author reportedly claiming in a now-deleted tweet that the British subject is “on a ventilator and talk (and joke)”.

This information was reportedly confirmed to the news agency by Rushdie’s agent Andrew Wylie, although no further details were given.

Wylie had previously said that Rushdie would likely lose an eye as a result of the attack, which also reportedly damaged some of the author’s organs.

“Salman will probably lose one eye; the nerves in his arm had been severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged,” the officer said when Rushdie was reportedly on a ventilator and unable to speak.

While the exact motive for the attack on the New York event is unknown, more details Get on to come forward about the stabbing, which has since been described by a prosecutor as a “targeted, unprovoked, pre-planned attack”.

Evidence has emerged that Hadi Matar, the man suspected of stabbing Rushdie, has in the past expressed condolences to radical Shia organizations, including Iran’s own Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Matar, who begged not guilty charged with attempted murder on Saturday, he also reportedly carried a fake driver’s license called “Hassan Mughnaiyah” — possibly a reference to Hezbollah’s high-ranking paramilitary leader Imad Mughniyah, whose organization is strongly supported and influenced by the Islamist regime of Iran.

Some sections of the Iranian media also have: praised the attack on Rushdie, who has reportedly been referred to as a “heretic” and a “renegade” in some publications.

These factors have fueled anger in the West, with now the senior Tory party and prime minister candidate Rishi Sunak demanding that tougher sanctions are imposed on Iran and that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is designated a terrorist organization.

“The situation in Iran is extremely serious and in standing up to [Vladimir] Putin, we can’t take our eyes off the ball elsewhere,” said Sunak The Telegraphalso claiming that a “nuclear-armed Iran would pose an existential threat to our ally Israel, and would indeed endanger all of Europe with ballistic missile capability”.

“Salman Rushdie’s brutal stabbing should be a wake-up call to the West, and Iran’s response to the attack strengthens the case for banning [the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terror organisation]he continued.
