Snake bans ‘should have been introduced sooner’, says MP

Hose Bans should have been introduced sooner, one MP said, as there are claims the UK could officially declare a drought this week.

Sir Robert Goodwill, the chairman of the Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said the BBC’s water companies may have delayed introducing hose bans because they are costing companies money.

“I think a ban on garden hoses makes a lot of sense,” he told the BBC’s Today programme.

“I think maybe the water companies waited and maybe should have done this sooner. 20 years ago when we had a hose ban before, a lot of people didn’t actually have a meter, they just paid their water tariff.”

“Now the situation is that it actually costs water companies to impose a garden hose ban and so I suspect they would have lasted longer than 25 years ago.”

His comments come as the UK prepares to declare a drought this week, according to i-newspaper reports.
