TL;DR

  • The Samsung Galaxy S23 series is reportedly getting satellite connectivity.
  • It is believed that Samsung is working on sending texts and images via satellite.
  • Apple and Huawei do not support satellite image transmission.

We’ve already seen it Apple and Huawei offer satellite connectivity on their latest flagship phones, but it sounds like the Galaxy S23 series could be next in line to get the feature.

from Korea ET news outlet reports that Samsung is developing satellite communications technology for the Galaxy S23 series, with Iridium as the apparent satellite partner.

The outlet adds that Samsung is working on sending low-quality text messages and images via satellite. The ability to send images seems a step up from Apple and Huawei’s satellite communications efforts. Both brands only allow you to send an emergency SMS and location information via satellite.

This news also comes after T-Mobile announced a partnership with Starlink for satellite communications. This will be limited to SMS, MMS and “supported” messaging apps when the beta program starts in late 2023. However, the duo also confirmed that they are pursuing voice and data coverage via satellite.

Nevertheless, we look forward to official confirmation from Samsung’s take on the service if it does indeed arrive. We are also looking forward to details such as pricing and geographic availability.
