Using the Depth app on Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra comes with an exclusive Depth app for recreational underwater activities, such as snorkeling. Here’s how to use it.

apples support page warns that the Depth app is not a dive computer. It does not provide information on decompression stop, gas analysis, or other data that divers need.

However, the Apple Watch Ultra and its depth sensor can work with third-party apps that: to do function as dive computers for recreational diving. It complies with EN13319, an internationally recognized standard for dive computers and meters.

The Depth app displays the current time, current depth, maximum depth achieved for the session, and water temperature. The depth sensor on Apple Watch Ultra is accurate to plus or minus 1 meter.

It operates to a maximum depth of 130 feet or 40 meters. The Apple Watch Ultra screen will turn yellow below this depth and some features may be affected or stop working.

Using the Depth app

The Depth app may open automatically when it detects that the Apple Watch Ultra has been submerged to a depth of one meter or more. Users can also manually start a dive session by opening the app or clicking the Action button.

To configure the Depth app to open automatically:

  1. Open Settings on Apple Watch Ultra.
  2. Tap Generaland then tap Auto start.
  3. There is a switch called Start app automatically that users can enable and disable.

To change the Depth app’s units of measurement:

  1. Open Settings on Apple Watch Ultra.
  2. Tap Depth.
  3. Choose between Feet or meterlike Fahrenheit or Celsius.

Before and after a dive

Users who want to record a workout, such as Open Water Swim, during their session should open the Workout app and start the workout before submerging the Apple Watch Ultra.

Once the Depth app is opened, either automatically or manually, Water Lock is enabled for the Apple Watch Ultra to prevent accidental inputs on the screen or with the Digital Crown.

Press and hold the Digital Crown to disable Water Lock and end the dive. The screen will unlock and the watch will make certain sounds to clear the water from the speaker.

After the dive, the Depth app displays a dive summary showing the time spent underwater, the maximum depth reached, and the water temperature range during the session.

After the summary is deleted, users can find water temperature and depth data in the Health app.
