Will India become the manufacturing hub of the next major iPhone Pro models?

Apple has been having a lot of trouble lately in China when it comes to producing iPhones. Since the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max were largely produced in China, production constraints have made it impossible for Apple to meet customer demand in a timely manner. A few days ago, TelecomTalk reported about the apparent shortage of iPhone 14 Pro models in India. Apple also issued a statement in early November saying that due to the COVID-19 situation in China, they have had to cut production significantly. But it’s not all; recently there were also protests at a Foxconn factory. Foxconn is one of the largest suppliers of iPhone to Apple.

Apple is already looking to move some of its production to India, as relying solely on China no longer seems like a good option. Technology giant Cupertino’s iPhone suppliers, including Pegatron, Wistron and Foxconn, can benefit from the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme that the Indian government has offered to smartphone manufacturers. Apple already assembles iPhones in India, including the latest iPhone 14. But the Pro models have never been the focus for Apple to manufacture or assemble in India.

However, the unrest in China could soon change that. Many analysts around the world expected Apple to move more of its iPhone production to India for the iPhone 15 series. Now it can happen even before that. In the near future, Apple could start exporting Indian-made iPhones in large numbers. This can also be the Pro models. According to an ET report, Foxconn and Pegatron are currently producing iPhone 14 devices in India. The delay in production of the Pro models in China is hurting Apple’s business, and the company is said to be trying to fix that soon, and India seems like the best way to go about it.
