BOXED wine is a great way to save money for a get-together – and a perfect picnic accompaniment too because it’s lighter and has plenty to share.
Today’s boxes of vino are much better thanks to new technology and better seals that give manufacturers the confidence to pack their best wines in this way.
Wine expert Helena Nicklin, from thethreedrinkers.comtasted a selection of boxed and bagged wines under 15 and gave us her verdict on five.
BEST TO IMPRESS: 5/5
Peach and strawberry scent and perfect for summer. This Gallic glugger hails from a warmer part of France, which adds an extra dollop of ripe fruit flavour.
This dazzling drop does not disappoint and would be delicious enjoyed over ice cream. Rich and heavy and great alone or with any kind of food, this lady in a pouch is class in a glass.
BEST FOR BBQS: 3/5
Another pretty good bag of wine, from the Italian region of Puglia. This elegant berry-red beauty is all about crunchy fruit flavors and plums with a rustic earthiness to boot.
Try it chilled out of a tumbler this summer for something different, which also makes it perfect for a picnic with pâté and cold cuts or a meat party BBQ. Bellissima!
Pinot Grigio: 2/5
The subtle, smoky twist betrays the Moldovan heritage.
It’s a decent drop that does what it says on the tin without setting the world on fire but also without tasting a hangover.
CHARDONNAY: 2/5
A bit like a wafer-thin French Chablis, but from Chile.
In terms of taste, it screams for some snacks. I would have a glass of this with a handful of salty nuts or chips, and a piece of hard cheese.
BEST FOR PARTY: 5/5
I was surprised how good this rosé in a box was for the price.
Dry, with subtle flavors of pear and red fruit – balanced and refreshing.
CHARDONNAY: 4/5
If you like your Chardonnay more soft vanilla than oak, this is a good choice.
This Aussie Chardonnay is fruity, ripe and round but not too sweet and very easy to drink.
BEST FOR DINNER: 3/5
This light and refreshing Italian wine is dry and savory with a yeasty kick and a refreshing, underripe pear vibe.
Nice for a summer dinner.
BEST FOR MAKING SANGRIA: 2/5
On the first gulp, this delectable red is brimming with sweet plum fruits with a velvety chocolate texture, but let down by a bitter finish.
An excellent basis for a summery jug of Sangria.
