Australian cricket great Michael Slater has been charged with assaulting a police officer after an alleged domestic violence incident.

The 53-year-old was arrested around midnight on Friday at a home in Noosa Heads, near the Sunshine Coast.

Police were called to the property over the alleged DV issue and a medical incident.

They will argue that Slater obstructed police and assaulted an officer, who suffered a minor gash on his hand.

No one else was physically injured.

The former test cricketer and commentator will appear before Noosa Magistrates Court on May 2.

A spokesman for Slater declined to comment when approached by Daily Mail Australia.

Slater played in 74 Tests for Australia, scoring 5312 runs at an average of 42.83 after debuting on the 1993 Ashes tour of England.

He also played 42 one-day internationals before retiring from major cricket in 2004 and embarking on a successful commentary career with Nine and Seven networks.

Seven dropped him ahead of the 2022 cricket season, citing budgetary pressures.

Slater also made headlines in 2021 when he criticized the government’s decision to place a flight ban on all travelers from India in response to the escalating Covid.

Last year he was convicted of common assault, violating a restraining order and two other felonies against a woman.

He was sentenced to two years in prison to serve in the community.

Slater moved from Sydney to Noosa in November to deal with his alcohol addiction problems and pursue a career as a psychiatrist.
