Ex-cop Rob Lewis arrested after ‘racist’ chat

a former metropolitan police agent has been arrested after being accused of sharing racist messages in a WhatsApp group.

Rob Lewis has also been suspended by the Home officewhere he worked as a civil servant.

The allegations came to light after an investigation by the BBC’s Newsnight program alleged that several police officers were members of the chat group.

Comments about Meghan Markleathe deadly floods in Pakistan and the deportation program of Rwanda are said to have spread.

The ex-police officer, who is in his sixties, has since been arrested on suspicion of violations under the Communications Act and misconduct in public office.

Responding to allegations made by Newsnight, Commander Jon Savell said, “Racism, misogyny, homophobia or other discriminatory behavior has no place at the Met.

“Where such behavior is seen, it will be dealt with firmly, but we will also actively seek out those whose actions shame us.”

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley added: ‘My plan for reform at the Met is already underway.

“I will be ruthless in eradicating those corrupt officers and staff, including racists and misogynists, from our organization.

“I have taken the helm as the leader of an organization that has been far too weak in apprehending those who undermine the honest and committed majority who are determined to serve the public.

“That will change and I will continue to look for those, both inside and outside the Met, with that constructive anger who can help us reform.”

The Met confirmed that the arrested man has been released pending further investigation.
