Federer match: Protester sets himself on fire at 02 Arena tennis competition

A

protester set fire to his arm at the Laver Cup tennis tournament in the 02 Arena.

The man cried out in terror before stunned spectators who saw him storm onto the track on Friday and sit down before flames shot from his arm.

Stunned onlookers watched as the man, believed to be a climate protester named Kai, stormed the court before sitting down by the net.

He then sat completely still as security rushed to the scene before arresting him.

The 20-year-old is a member of the End UK Private Jets group, which claims that ‘carbon emissions in 2022 are genocide’.

Earlier, another protester tied himself to the net during the French Open semifinal between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic.

Right after Kai’s stunt, End UK Private Jets posted a video on Twitter explaining why he would set his arm on fire.

He said: “In a few hours I will go to the Laver Cup tennis tournament and set my arm on fire on the field.

“People are going to say things like ‘this is terrible’, people in the stadium will be disturbed, and everyone who hears about it will be really traumatized, especially if they’ve had experiences with things like self-harm.

“Feelings of anger about this… I think it’s right to be angry about that, because it’s unjust for people to experience suffering.

“Humanity should have a responsibility to stop that kind of shit, nobody deserves to experience suffering, especially young and vulnerable people.

“If we really believe that… the way we pretend that’s true is to stop the climate emergency as soon as possible.

“Because right now we are on a path where hundreds of millions of people are going through unimaginable suffering, namely social collapse, torture, famine, drought and war and shit like that.”

The protest was the opening day of the Laver Cup, which runs until Sunday at London’s O2 Arena.

During the tournament, Team Europe takes on The World in a huge tennis bonanza.

it will be Roger Federer’s last ATP event since announcing his impending retirement from the game.

He teams up with career rival Rafael Nadal tonight to take on Americans Francis Tiafoe and Jack Sock in a men’s doubles.
