Liz Truss has ‘gambled the economy,’ Piers Morgan says at question time, but panel asks Brits to give her a chance’

LIZ Truss has been playing “casino politics” with the economy, Piers Morgan said during Question Time last night.

The Prime Ministers first weeks in the office were also an “utter mess” with a “reckless gamble” that “shouldn’t have happened”, the Sun columnist added.

And he insisted she was “ready,” telling the audience, “I’m not sure how she can have the brass neck to stay.”

But fellow panelist and businessman Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, 65, begged the public to give her a chance, insisting that people make mistakes and it’s unfair to condemn her so soon after taking power.

An audience member kicked off the BBC show by asking, “How long do you think Liz Truss will be able to continue as Prime Minister?”

It comes after the economic turmoil after the Prime Minister mini budget last month.

The Tories fell in the pollswith Labor currently having an average lead of 25 points.

But markets recovered after Mrs Truss and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng You opposed a controversial planned abolition of the 45p higher tax rate.

Piers Morgan told the audience, “If you come in at this stage with the polls as catastrophic as they are, which is a direct result of the very first thing you do for the country, and you play casino politics with the country’s economy, I’m not sure how she has the brass neck to stay.

“This should be the party with fiscal responsibility, but the opposite is true.

“They have gambled with our economy, our finances. But I’m afraid it won’t be them who suffer.

“It will be the poorest members of our society who wake up to some horrific bills.

“And they’re going to say, ‘Well, we’ll help you with utility bills’. Well, what about the mortgages? They’re going to lower utility bills.

“It has been an absolute mess. I think it was a reckless gamble. It should never have happened and it has to stop at the Prime Minister’s door.”

Mr Emmanuel-Jones hit back, saying it’s “ridiculous” to talk about getting rid of her.

He said: “Four weeks. We’re actually trying to say that after four weeks we’re going to make a decision about whether Liz is good or not?

“We are having this discussion about whether she will become Prime Minister based on the performance of her first four weeks.

“It’s just a ridiculous conversation to have. If she had 12 months, it would be an honest conversation.

“She’s been bold. What she’s trying to do is something really brutal. When you try to do things that are really brutal, sometimes you’re wrong.

“The most important thing for success is that you have to accept that you fail at some things.

“The main thing when you get it wrong is you have to turn and turn fast.

“You have to give someone more than four weeks to decide whether they are good or not.”
