A school bus crashed into a house Thursday morning, injuring at least 7 children on board.

Police in the small New York suburb of Ramapo are investigating how a school bus veered off the road just before 9 a.m., hitting two parked cars and a home.

Before coming to a stop at the bottom of a hill, the bus also scraped against a telephone pole and several trees.

Photos and video from the crime scene show that the front engine compartment of the bus was largely destroyed. The impact caused at least one parked car to flip over.

A car also partially ended up under the bus and was dragged out of the parking lot.

The impact appears to have destroyed part of the house and ripped off some of the side panels. However, no one in the home was injured.

A total of 21 children were on board when the accident occurred. Seven children were taken to hospital, as well as the driver.

Five of the children were treated for minor bumps and abrasions. Two others, both five-year-old boys, suffered more serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The 37-year-old driver was treated for minor injuries and did not appear to be under the influence, police said.

Several ambulances and the fire brigade came to the scene to rescue the children from the destroyed bus.

Rockland County is home to a large Orthodox Jewish community, and the children were taken to school at a private Jewish yeshiva just a few miles from the accident scene.

“Our thoughts are with the children and their families as we pray for a speedy recovery,” said Rockland County Supervisor Michael Specht.

Rockland County is about 30 miles northwest of New York City and is home to about 300,000 people, according to the most recent census data.
