He added: “Some people identify as another sex to the one they were born with.”
At the 2021 census, 0.5 percent – 262,000 people – said their sex is now not the same as it was at birth.
Of these, 48,000 – 0.1 percent of the population – identify as trans women.
Last year, Harry Potter author JK Rowling said the labour party “can no longer be counted on to defend women’s rights”.
