About 935,000 people in southeastern Michigan were advised to boil their drinking water on Saturday after a critical pipe burst was reported.

The 23 communities include Flint, Pontiac, Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, Utica and Troy, de Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) said:.

GLWA is working to isolate a break in a 120-inch water transmission line that distributes ready drinking water from our Lake Huron Water Treatment Facility to communities in the northern portion of GLWA’s drinking water supply area. https://t.co/6GHbtiQdLj pic.twitter.com/X2z34yAUhN

Crews have identified the location of the leak, about a mile west of the authority’s Lake Huron Water Treatment Facility.

In response to the water supply breach, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) on Saturday afternoon.

The SEOC has so far “received bottled water requests and is working to meet them,” the governor’s office said.

The 120-inch pipe in St. Clair County, called an aqueduct, carries treated water from Lake Huron and is the largest in the system, the agency said.

“Once the leak is isolated, crews will begin to open emergency connections to other pipes in the system to restore some power to the affected communities,” the agency said.

“A loss of pressure can lead to bacterial contamination in the water system. … Boiling water before it is used kills bacteria and other organisms residing in the water,” according to the GLWA.

Residents in the affected provinces are urged not to drink the water without boiling it first. The authority advises residents to boil all water for at least a minute and then let it cool before use.

“Boiled, bottled or disinfected water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food until further notice,” the agency said.
