RIO FERDINAND has accused Manchester United of “whoring” themselves to try to capture Frenkie de Jong.
Erik ten Hag made signing the midfielder one of his top priorities after replacing Ole Gunnar Solskajer as manager, but has been snubbed by the Barcelona ace.
But the former Ajax boss refuses to give up his compatriot’s signing, much to the frustration of the Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand.
Ferdinand said on his Atmosphere with Five podcast: “We are almost whoring for this player.
“For three months in the transfer window, with our hats off, begging, ‘Please come to us, please come to us.’
De Jong, 25, is determined to stay at Barca to recoup the wages he cut during the height of the pandemic.
But Chelsea, United’s Premier League rival, is also interested in signing the Dutch international.
Ten Hag’s nightmare comes to life at The Theater of Dreams Saturday as his troops were beaten 4-0 by Brentford.
United are currently ROCK SOIL from the Premier League table conceded six goals in their first two games.
Ferdinand said of the defeat: “I don’t feel sorry for the players, I feel sorry for Ten Hag.

“He comes under false pretenses. He comes expecting new purchases.
“He’s probably sitting there thinking, ‘I’ve been sold a dummy here. I didn’t know I was getting into this.” Confidence, I know, would be low.
“He knew that, but he thought, ‘I’ll be able to rebuild that’, but it’s clear the players are not up to the required standard. It’s that simple.
“Some players will sit there and say ‘that’s not okay, you can’t talk’, it’s a fact! The results tell you that.
“This is not a result over a month or two, this is a result over a long sustained period of time.
“You’ve had plenty of time to lose shape and rebuild it and come back and show us your true self. It’s not happening.”
United will try to win another week on Monday as they welcome Liverpool, who are on the hunt for the title, to Old Trafford.
